Motion sickness, the discomfort one feel while travelling in bus, car, or in any means of transport.
This is
quite common in people. The motion of the body is detected by the vestibular
system, related to the inner ear. The fluids inside the inner ear sends signals
to brain to maintain body equilibrium. In repeated movement of head, as occurs
in travel, there occurs difficulty to maintain this equilibrium.
Also the coordination
between different sense organs is not easy for nervous system, during travel. The
moving visual perception, and a different muscular position confuses it. This
cause dizziness, nausea, cold, sweating, head ache, gastric discomfort,
vomiting. The symptoms vary with individual. These symptoms resolve with end of
journey. If it stays an expert medical advice should be seemed for.
Some common
tips to overcome:
Check your diet. Avoid heavy and fat
rich food. Light and easily digestible help you feel comfortable. Spicy foods,
coffee, sweets, chocolates and alcohol can create uneasiness.
Avoid strong odors or unpleasant
perfumes.
If you can select a seat, go for the
least moving part of vehicle
Try for ventilation
Select seat which face the direction
of travel
Avoid reading, use of phone etc.
while travelling.
Better to close your eyes or sleep
Closing ears with cotton is also
found useful in some.
Ayurvedic medicines which can alleviate the Vata and Kapha Dosha of body
will be helpful. Chewing cumin or coriander seeds may be helpful. Smelling
lemon, lemon grass, eucalyptus oil is also beneficial. Dhanvantharum gulika,
Eladi lehyam, Karpooradi choornam etc. are some good medications in similar
conditions.
Knee joint is a compound
joint, which is structured by multiple bones and covered by a knee cap
(patella). As every joint it has connections of ligaments, attachment of muscle
tendons, capsular protection, lubrication by synovial fluid and cushioning by
meniscus. This joint is structured complex and strong since it has much
functional responsibility.
These can be compared to
the mobile pillars of body. It supports your body weight and enables all your
motions.
Disorders of knee joint is mainly connected with sports injury, elderly medicine, nutritional defects and overweight.
Knee injury
Injury to the bones of the knee joint can cause moderate to extreme pain, depending on the severity of the bruise or fracture. Considering how integral the knee joint is to movement, injury to these bones may also cause reduced mobility during the healing process. Injuries to the leg bones are most common in contact sports such as football, hockey, cricket.
Meniscus damage The meniscus is a c-shaped pad of cartilage that separates the tibia and the femur and provides cushion and stability. It can be damaged in a single traumatic injury or degrade over time through mini-traumas. People who are older, who run on uneven surfaces, or who make sudden turns and hard stops (e.g. Soccer players) are at the greatest risk for damage to the meniscus.
Knee osteoarthritis
Injuries to the knee can also occur
as a result of aging and normal degradation of the body
Osteoarthritis. This is
the most common diagnosis in all of medicine. This form of arthritis is
very common, and occurs when the hyaline articular cartilage wears away
from the ends of a bone. Without the cushioning provided by that
cartilage, the bones of the knee joint can rub together during motion and
cause pain within the joint.
Achy, stiff, and possibly swollen knees may be signs of osteoarthritis. Experts
debate whether or not regular running for exercise causes knee osteoarthritis.
Some experts argue that running does not cause knee osteoarthritis, but that people who already have knee osteoarthritis may accelerate the wear-and-tear on their knee joint by running regularly. Many health advocates assert that running regularly for exercise provides other health benefits, such as weight control, that outweigh potential arthritic damage to the knees.
Overweight
The knees experience pressure equal to approximately 3
times the body’s weight when walking and approximately 5 times the body’s
weight when running. In other words, a person who weighs 70 kgs puts about 350
kgs of pressure on the knee when landing each running stride.
Other conditions:
Gout. This condition arises from high uric acid levels within the body and results in inflammation and deposition of uric acid crystals within the synovium (joint capsule). This results in knee stiffness and pain within the knee joint. Gout pain typically comes on quickly, and can become severe in a matter of hours.
Pseudogout. Similar to gout, pseudogout causes sudden and severe inflammation and pain in the affected joint. Pseudogout results in calcium pyrophosphate deposition within the synovium (joint capsule).
Vitamin d and calcium deficiency can affect the knee joint.
Ayurveda:
Ayurveda calls knee joint as Janu Sandhi. It is a vital spot (Marma) which by its injury causes morbidity. The structure of this joint is maintained by the Kapha Dosha and function is managed by the Vatha Dosha.
All disorders affecting joint are analyzed based on this
disturbance in Dosha and treatment is decided as per them. As the basic plan of
treatment the functionality of joint is improved by strengthening and
nourishing treatments and exercises.
For structural compactness and lubrication different sorts of
therapeutic modalities are also advocated.
Nutritional enhancement and reduction of weight must also be
considered as conditions demand.

Ayurveda is the eternal, holistic, Vedic science of life, and the traditional natural healing system of India. Ayurveda builds a healthy body, and establishes inner peace. This science stems from the principle that everything in the universe is made up of the Pancha Mahabuthas or five basic elements: Akash (Space), Vayu (Air), Agni (Fire), Jal (Water) and Prithvi (Earth).
Combinations of these element pairs create the three biological forces of Tridoshas- Vata (Space & Air), Pitta (Fire) and Kapha (Earth). Harmonizing these forces leads to a healthy way of life, while disruption of the balance causes ailments.
Ayurveda treats the person as a whole-the body, the mind and the soul. It helps to maintain balance and creates harmony in our existential reality, both the intangible emotional expressions and the tangible physiological realities. Today, Ayurveda is the forefront of mind-body medicines, gaining attention throughout the world. Ayurveda, with its understanding of life and consciousness, will become the medicine of the future.
